Dr. Fritz J. Baumgartner is a cardiothoracic surgeon, educator, and scholar with decades of experience in complex cardiac and thoracic surgery, academic medicine, and surgical education. Born to immigrant parents from Switzerland and Germany and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Baumgartner’s early life was shaped by faith, perseverance, and a strong work ethic. After graduating from Loyola High School, he earned his degree in Biology from Loyola Marymount University, graduating Summa Cum Laude and receiving both the highest academic honor at the university and the Karl Kadner Biology Award. He then completed his medical degree at UCLA School of Medicine, followed by surgical residency at Harbor-UCLA and a cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of British Columbia. Throughout his career, Dr. Baumgartner has held leadership roles including Acting Head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at UCLA School of Medicine. His surgical work has included advanced procedures for valvular heart disease, coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic dissection and aneurysm repair (including the Bentall procedure), thoracic oncology, and complex trauma cases. He has also been recognized as an expert leader in the surgical management of severe hyperhidrosis, contributing extensive clinical experience, published articles, and scholarly reviews to the field. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Baumgartner is a prolific author and educator, with hundreds of publications and presentations. He is the author of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Primer series for residents and fellows and teaches Surgery 101 Technical Skills, a hands-on boot camp designed to inspire students through practical surgical experience before traditional didactic instruction. His career reflects a consistent focus on patient care, surgical excellence, and advancing medical education.
