About

Dr. Fritz J. Baumgartner is a cardiothoracic surgeon whose life and career have been guided by faith, scholarship, and service to patients. Raised in a family grounded in Catholic values and shaped by stories of resilience from his parents’ European upbringing, he developed an early calling to medicine and surgery. From a young age, he was drawn to science and healing, committing himself to a life devoted to caring for the sick. That commitment led him through rigorous academic achievement at Loyola Marymount University and UCLA School of Medicine, followed by advanced cardiothoracic training and leadership in high-acuity trauma and cardiac surgery environments. Dr. Baumgartner has maintained a deep interest in the ethical foundations of medicine, including scholarly work on the Hippocratic Oath, medical ethics, and publication bias in academic journals. His professional philosophy emphasizes the central purpose of medicine: caring for the patient. Beyond clinical work, he has been honored with multiple awards, including the Loyola Marymount University Scholar of the Year Award (1979), the Karl Kadner Biology Award, and the Southern California Physician Assistant Preceptor of the Year Award (2022). He remains dedicated to mentoring students and residents through innovative educational programs such as Surgery 101 Technical Skills. Outside of medicine, he enjoys nature hikes and spending time with his family, maintaining balance between professional excellence and personal fulfillment.
